Understanding
The Valais Blacknose Breed
The Valais Blacknose sheep displays distinctive features categorized into three main areas: General Appearance, Confirmation, and Wool.
The name “Blacknose” stems from the sheep’s defining characteristic — a black nose extending to the centre of the head, connecting seamlessly with the dark area surrounding the eyes.
The ears also share this black colouring, extending to the point where they meet the head. Notably, knees and hocks sport black spots, while the hoof/ankle region is entirely black, resembling a pair of black boots.
Ewes feature a black tail spot, a trait absent in rams. Both ewes and rams boast helical or spiral horns that grow outward from the head.
The wool of the Valais Blacknose is a crucial aspect of its identity. Covering the entire body, head, and legs evenly, it highlights the sheep’s robust frame. This woollen coat is a key element of the breed’s distinct appearance.
